The most poignant one of the times is “A Republic madam, if you can keep it.”

ayup. But this one points to individual choice and how many times have we gotten something we wanted and then found it wasn’t

People have this bad habit of preferring to let others think for them, it creates unattainable & unfulfilling concepts of happiness because we’re not pursuing our own happiness in the 1st place… just doing what we’re told.

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…………..I absolutely agree and will continue to do so! Happiness is NEVER guaranteed, it isn’t a “right” in any sense of the word, anywhere. In some places more than others, the pursuit of it is easier, but………..happiness can be found where we aren’t, too, no matter who we are.

Does the Constitution guarantee anything at all? Who is the guarantor backing that document? Think, folks.

    October 15, 2016
    1. SEC

It does in a contractual sense, and like a contract it is based on agreed upon principles and terms. Again like a contract there are steps and procedures to amend or change it, one party can not just up and change it without the consent of the other parties. The rights enumerated are a gift from God and are not man’s to amend or change. We hoped to be a country of laws not men. In a true country of laws all are equally obligated to the law. In a country of men you find privilege which has origins in private laws for special segments.

I’d like to point out that this quote was not actually said by Benny Franklin. Much like that “If you can’t handle me at my worst then you don’t deserve me at my best” spiel that was wrongly attributed to that junkie patron saint of the Internet Marilyn Monroe.
It’s an alright quote, but these misattributed quotes just annoy me.

      1. mister-sandman

Not your fault some numb skull attributed some quote to the wrong person. People do it online all the time. There’s no telling who said it originally.

Multiple fairly reliable quote sources attribute to Ben.

          1. mister-sandman

And other reliable sources say otherwise, but regardless of the originator, we’ll spend hours researching and debating who said this and why. In the end, whoever said it was right.

ayup and since neither of us is old enough to have been in the audience when it was said it, it shall have to remain of dubious attribution though of a character with other of Ben’s sayings

              October 15, 2016
    2. GoldenPig2012

mister-sandman…………………..well, thank you. It isn’t a quote from Ben. I’m glad I know that, thank you for sharing. I didn’t bother to look it up, my bad, ha ha hah aha, trusting ol’ SEC, giggle. That’s my laziness and I appreciate the information.

But, no matter who said it…………..my original reply to this stands. Damn you, SEC!!! ha ha haha Always on my nerves, that one. And……….I HATE being misinformed, guess I should start looking shit up again. Dang.

      October 29, 2016
      1. SEC

While it is questionably attributed, several fairly reliable quote sources do make that attribution. It is of a nature similar to other of his sayings. Happiness was considered a natural state of mankind and the abolitionists did not want the phrase to stand as the pursuit of property as some might try to classify slaves as property they wanted no such connection to be possisble so the phrase was changed to pursuit of happiness.
