A proclamation and a prayer

Thanksgiving Proclamation

Issued by President George Washington, at the request of Congress, on October 3, 1789

By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and—Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favor, able interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other trangressions; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

Given under my hand at the City of New York the third day of October in the year of our Lord 1789.

Go. Washington

Then taken from the above proclamation President George Washington made this prayer:

May we all unite in rendering unto God our sincere and humble thanks— For His kind care and protection of the people of this country, For the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have enjoyed,

For the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness,

For the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge, and in general for all the great and various favors which He hath been pleased to confer upon us.

And may we also unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him—

To pardon our national and other transgressions,

To enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually,

To render our national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed,

To protect and guide all nations and to bless them with good government, peace, and concord,

To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science,

And generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best.

To that I can only add Amen

I know. By “we”, I meant American patriots. The rest can do as they wish because we don’t very much give a damn.

again you misunderstand the meaning and purpose it is not American specific but each to honor and thank as they see fit. As a group Americans have things for which they should be thankful

Old George cannot dictate a proclamation for the whole world.
              Only I can do that.

Interesting! Liberals believe that freedom OF “Religion” is the same thing as Freedom FROM Religion. Apparently everyone needs to be either an unbeliever or an agnostic before they will be happy. Guess they’ll have to wait until I’m dead…

just as some seem to believe that freedom of speech includes a freedom from being offended

      November 24, 2016
      1. willsblog

My problem with the “freedom from being offended” is that it requires that others ARE offended. For example I am personally offended by the vulgarity, profanity and gratuitous sexual content that they don’t feel is offensive but I do. So my question is what makes THEM so “elite” and “superior” that they aren’t to be offended by my clean content yet they don’t have a problem with me being offended by their lack of cleanliness?

        how so?

Well, the religious generally not only demand you see God exactly the way they do but, that you come to know Him in the way they have… your baptism doesn’t count because it’s not “in the blood” or vice versa with water, oil…. Now with the atheists you’re rejecting their proof, heresy & in a young small faith heresy is a mortal sin, as an agnostic they feel welcome to evangelize you to their cause by offering you their favorite Dawkins book, this great YouTube video that makes it all so perfectly clear or taking you to meet their friend. The atheist generally feels that they’ve proven no God by demanding proof there is & being given none, that an agnostic generally figures if there is a God then they should probably keep on trying to be the good person they think they should & that’s about the best they can do, after all no God worth worship is going to ask for the secret handshake at the Gates of Heaven & IF there isn’t a god, then either we should still be good people for basically the same reasons OR we should be out there taking advantage of others in every way possible because it’s all about now & me until the lights go out. Very few are really cool with an agnostic, not if they’re true believers yea or nay.

I see you for who you really are and it’s not god, not a god, not perfect, not omniscient, not omnipresent, not powerful, not sane, not the author nor the finisher of our faith. You are obviously deluded.

Are you happy with real Americans?

        November 24, 2016
        1. Munkyman

Let’s go ahead & get political, the 1st step in fixing a problem is admitting you have one. Electing Trump in my opinion is exactly that. So I’m happy we may be getting ready to work on the things that matter: education, jobs, infrastructure & border/trade security. This election had very low turn out compared to 2008, so the reality is the “real Americans” chose not to even participate & who could be happy with that? The “real Americans” will be out shopping by 7 p.m. tonight & by Monday will have spent themselves into debt most won’t see the end of til May & some won’t ever see behind them. There’s very little to be happy about with “real Americans” who care more about today’s football game than the men & women fighting & dying so they don’t have to worry about a draft.

          1. jaageet

Politics have nothing to do with this. Real Americans are kids whose parents take them to Pigeon Forge for Thanksgiving, kids who drink white milk, eat chicken tenders and French fries. They are the reason why we need a country, a nation that protects what they mean to us. They may seem banal and trite to folks who see Trump in the same disparaging light. It’s time to take care of our own. And only birds of a feather will flock together. To each his own.

As I said the vast majority don’t even care enough in an election that’s billed as the apocalypse to even vote. It’s hard to be happy with them. Most of those kids would rather play NBA Live, Madden or SOCOM than bother with graduate school, 1/2 won’t get past high school & 1/2 that go to college won’t finish. Who would be happy with that?

We have to take care of our own. Let them play. Some ended up as billionaires from all that playing. Going to college is not the only way out. We need to nurture the one winning quality Americans have: the can do spirit. Trump is the redneck who fought against all odds, against all disdainful intellectual elites, in true American style to win. He has restored the American dream that used to inspire all kids and their parents to want to be President of the USA.

Americans celebrate Thanksgiving not as a group but as a nation. The meaning of Thanksgiving is American specific. It is our God-given tradition when Christian Americans gave thanks to their Creator. Today, all over America, folks observe this holiday regardless of how it came about. That’s ok. It’s the same as for Christmas. No one needs to get bogged down by the specifics that unify us as a nation.
